| I would say it depends on the company. A company would try to make sure they gain a profit otherwise they wouldn't make tempting offers like this. I usually make offers to promote my webhosting business on forums by offering the first month with a 70% discount. Is that risk?
I don't think so. The only risk is to gain more customers that stay if they're pleased with the service that's being provided. I think these kind of offers are more or less the same as paying for advertizing. It all depends on the company, and the company's goals they try to achieve by making these offers.
I know some companies however will have a 'catch'. Meaning they'll try to make up for the 'loss' by sticking ads on your website etc. that pays for it, effectively turning their customers' websites into an advert. I'm not saying this is always the case, but it's one possible way to counter the discount they offer.
