Unlimited Bandwidth

Anyone have any experience with hosts promising unlimited bandwidth? I'm just curious how they can say that.

Do they have rules?

I see a lot of people setting up groups against unlimited bandwidth and just want to learn more about how they do it all.

We can offer you unlimited hosting, so yes it's possible.

Most of them though do not offer this but instead you have a fair use policy, little letters in their aup (acceptable use policy) or tos (terms of service)

We however can bring you unlimited hosting with these standards, Xpert package:

160GB Space
32TB Bandwidth / month (32.000 GB)

for as low as $750.- / month

Some advice from others.

Virtual hosting is a broad term that refers to hosting in which you share a computer with other users- in other words, non dedicated hosting. For sites just starting off or small to medium sites, virtual hosting is the best route to go, as it allows you to keep your cost down while recieving full support from the host. Here are a few tips when choosing a virtual host:
· Before you select a host, email their support department just to see how fast their response time is. While most virtual hosts offer free support, the qauality of this support is the issue here.
· Estimate how popular your site will become in the next few months, and choose a hosting plan with bandwidth allotments that can meet that demand. 10 gigs of monthly bandwidth should accomodate any site with up to 500 visitors a day.
· Choose a host that offers a control panel such as CPanel or Ensim if you're new to web hosting. A control panel offers an intuitive, graphical interface to setting up common features such as email, web stats, mySQL etc.
· Avoid hosts that offer unlimited monthly bandwidth. It is logically impossible, and any host offering it is being dishonest and even devious.

Cheers,

The package above is dedicated though Your very own server, leased Dual Xeon on an OC-256 Line.

And yes I agree with hosts saying unlimited datatransfer, really unlimited hosting as 'they' say.. is mostly binded to a specific file size limit (200kb a page), that way you will not ever generate more than a few Gigs a month. (i.e. 500 pages visited by 4000 visitors each day generates 2 Gigs a month)

Going with that example taken (which most do) you can sell or give away free space and unl. bandwidth, but keeping the 404 and/or exit pages of every 'free site' to the main domain.
