managed or self-managed

Which VPS do you prefer - managed or self-managed and why?

If you are technically sound and have confidence for managing your server then you can go with self-managed VPS, but i will always suggest you to go for managed hosting as in case if you are lacking short at issue then you can contact your host any time.
I can offer you fully managed VPS, Dedicated hosting at no extra cost.
Our technical staff would monitor your server round the clock.

Harrysmith, you are probably a host, right? Then you will agree that by "managed VPS plan" different hosts imply dofferent set of features. Like you may have or may have not a control panel included into the package, and the few VPS packages I looked into are completely different.
a2hosting.com offer their customers to have complete freedom and install Apache, PHP, E-Mail on their unmanaged VPS.
Serverpoint.com offers choosing between Cpanel and Plesk and they also do VPS reboot, DNS transfers and bandwidth and port monitoring. As you see, you get some basic management from your host even if the plan is unmanaged and there are also quite a big number of VPS tutorials.

I agree with Joice in that hosts have quite varying ideas of Managed hosting.
It's always best to confirm with the host before signing up what the exact specs of the management is for the service you're looking at.

I don't think it really comes down to a preference though, like choosing a distro usually does. If you can't manage it yourself you either have to learn, and understand that you're not paying for support, or pay for support.

If what you're hosting is mission critical stuff, you lack the administrative abilities that the project requires and your budget doesn't afford you managed services you should be reconsidering your business plan.

If ServerPoint.com provides cPanel and Plesk fopr their VPS, I consider it's done for customers' convenience 'cause some like using cPanel the others Plesk. It's the question of habit.

A2hosting.com offers VPS for $17 per month. This news made me think of buying one from them.

Do ServerPoint.com provide Windows VPS plans? Or can Plesk go with Linux as well?
