Santrex.net provides VPS on Windows, Linux and FreeBSD OS. I am in two minds as I don't know which one to start from.
What would you advise me to do?

If not, start from Linux one from Santrex.net as it's the cheapest platform and easier to administrate.

I advise you to compare the company you mentioned with Globaltap.com as it offers more interesting features: Linux, FreeBSD, Sun Solaris and Windows 2003/2008 VPS hosting solutions at really affordable prices. You need to look at the quality of the service and especially customer support, as this company has.

I'd recommend you not to concentrate your attention only on one company, widen your outlook.
Glowhost.com provides lovely VPS deals and you may choose the one right for yourself from them as well.

I personally recommend you stay far away from santrex, as a former customer. I wish I would have researched them before signing up... I stumbled on this non profit ad-free site Santrex Sucks | Santrex is the worst company ever which is dedicated to informing consumers about santrex's horrible busness practices before they give away their hard earned money.

I have had owbn experience with santrex some time ago, and may tell you I was completely satisfied with tehir services.

Though I used sghared hosting, I think VPS are OK as well. Every host has some issues and this is normal. Considering their overall efficiency it remains rather high.

As for the sites, there are people who do not like Hostgator, or bluehost and post everywhere their bad reviews, which cannot be the criterion of estimating.

Go linux. this is the most used OS platform. The maore so because this is cheapr also at santrex.net.

To be honest, if you're only starting with the above operating systems, perhaps it's worth trying to install one and play with it on a home PC using something like VMWare? That way, you can work your way around the OS and determine which one suits you best without having to pay any additional fees.

Once you're ready, it's usually pretty easy to copy configuration files to any real VPS you buy.

santrex has rather contraversary reviews. May tell about bad services, others - about good. I have had a site ate the shared account on american server,a nd may tell you they are more good than bad, just as an average hosting provider, at least at the American servers.

IMHO there are more reasonable deals presented at pinellashosting.com. The company is offering managed VPS solutions for the prices that are te lowest I know.
