Some companies do provide free domain names with their hosting plans. Also, some companies provide free give outs.

Never heard of free domain unless:-
One is hosting with a company who offer free domain (having cost of the domain recovered from web hosting plam)

Two. subdomain kind like myname.abc.com which towed with abc.com

Microsoft, of all people, will give you a website and domain name absolutely free. Though aimed at small businesses, anyone can register and set up a website.
