Thumbs down unlimited domains!!!

Hello,

I was thinking about unlimited domains, when resellers buy such packages, they usually indulge in overselling, which results to bad customer service in the long term. But people still do this, why? How can they afford to be so indifferent/careless sometimes?
Which ultimately leads to the question, why do the web hosts themselves do this? Why do web hosts think that it is logical to do this just for making a few extra bucks?

The hosting business is being commoditized and there is a price war. With new technologies like hosting automation applications, it is easier to break into the hosting business. Since there are so many hosters, many will say anything and do anything to get a customer.

I do not think talking about unlimited domains to one hosting plans is a good idea at all. Why? The first comes to my mind is that every well established web site need to be managed by it's own CP area.

So offering unlimited domains is a hook for people who need a budget web hosting solution for a few separate domains!

Regards
D.

but that still does not address the big issue, that this terminology basically fools customers into thinking that they are getting something really good when they are normally not.

your right, nothing in this world is UNLIMITED, i think they should say " Un-Metered", how ever in the real world, no one can have UNLIMITED domains, they will always have LIMITED number of domains... even we offer " Un-Metered" domains, but i never seen a client having more then 300 domains in a given accout on a given server.

most of the hosting offer "UNLIMITED" domains to sell there hosting, most customers look for "UNLIMITED" things, like bandwidth, its not domains that you should think of when it comes to hosting , its BANDWIDH, dam its LIMITED, even the datacenter where they offer "UNLIMITED" this is the BID LIE, each ever has a T1 or other trype of links most of the links are limited to 3 to 4Mbps if the datacnter is really good. as you can see if all the site start to use the bandwidth that the hosting company say they will offer how can the link hadle the trafic ?

at the end, the "big issue" is site geting slow and our just going offline..... when it come to hosting only hand full of site use bandwith on a server, thats why they over sell bandwith.............

its all about taking risks

I don't understand the appeal of this type of "unlimited domain" offer. I'm sure customers care about how many sites are on a webserver, as they are concerned about the host cramming too many sites on a server. Yet, they want to sign up for hosting with a host that gives everyone on the box "unlimited domains". Go figure...

I agree too. Having unlimited domains is just like a marketing scam to attract more customer. In this world, there is no such thing as free lunch. My previous experience has taught me to pay for what you want.

Unlimited domains means unlimited domain pointers, hardly anyone wants to host 1000s of domains so you can take a risk...

Hello guys. I think that webhoster should be honest. Few days ago I visited www.siteocity.com. There are not to many words "unlimited". I guess that they provide honest services for their customers.

Overselling is 100% okay,as long as you are doing it within limits. Unless you are overselling, you are just wasting the resources. Most people doesnt use even 10% of the resources allowed, then why should the hosts not oversell?

But sometimes it goes to the rediculous heights. Hosts are generally smart enough to put conditions like % of CPU usage to compensate for unlimited space/transfer.

Point taken. Unless that account owner employs hundreds of assistants to oversee the unlimited number of domains owned, this situation is impossible to achieve. It is highly unethical if you acquired a big number of domain because you plan to sell later.
