In a shared platform, you have access to the server's full RAM and cpu. Unlike a VPS (guaranteed amounts, but low) or a dedicated server (could be budget, or higher priced). Also, your provider takes care of all security and upgrades needed on the server.
The disadvantage is mostly in that another user can have a script loop nonstop by mistake, which affects the loading of your sites (this being one of many things that can affect performance), makes the load get very high, and crashes the server. By choosing a good company to partner with, you usually avoid these situations.
