How should a site be assessed to know whether it is successful as far as search engine rankings are concerned? What is considered a good ranking?

A successful site is one that ranks high enough for its chosen search
terms that it gets sufficient visitors to achieve the objective that you
had in setting up the site in the first place.

Rep Power: 0 | "success" would depend on what your objectives are and your marketing strategy. What are your objectives? What is your marketing strategy?
For example, if you are not going to spend any money on marketing and only rely on search engine ranking - then "success" may be being #1 for specific keywords. If you are going to be spending millions on advertising, then your search engine rankings won't really matter as much - you would work at it and hopefully get on the first page of search results, but it wouldn't be a priority for your business.

Rep Power: 3 | Totally relative, there is no definition.
But if you really want me to define, I would say - reaching your target is success |

Rep Power: 3 | For me, se rankings are measured purely in terms of traffic brought to your site and/or revenue. But generally it's good to be on the first page in the se results on your query. |

It is also important that the targeted keywords are mentioned in the body tag, although the title tag seems to be more important. Using keywords in bold or strong tags seems to have a slight effect on the top rankings. Web pages that used the keywords in image file names often had higher rankings.
It's no surprise that the number of inbound links and the PageRank had a large influence on the page rankings on Google. |

| The first question is relative to your goals but I would have to say that you would want to be on the 1st page for the chosen keyword.
Good ranking would be 1st but then again being in the top 3 for several million results can not be a bad thing either.
