  • How important is your domain name?

"hypothetically can't the domain name be anything and just kill the SEO on the key words?"

    Yes, jobs = monster.com

"Isn't the power of a brand better than having a site that has your key words in the domain name?"

You can go either way, or have both. Shoes.com, Cooking.com, Diapers.com, Art.com, Calendars.com, Magazines.com, Golfballs.com etc. Those are well known sites with the major keywords they're targeting. Of course keywords like that will cost you an arm and a leg or aren't even available in the first place.

You pretty much can brand anything. The shorter the better, the easier to spell the better, put it with an extension the public is familiar with.
Those domains are premium domains and the normal user would not have access to those. Domains such as the ones you listed already get x amount of unique visitors per month and SEO isn't really required.

If you’re not going to put a keyword in a domain name, you’re going to create a domain name that will soon be based on brand. A few brandable domains include Yahoo, Facebook, and Twitter. These domain names have nothing to do with what the company actually does, so there is no keywords found in the domain names, but they are still successful because they are created for branding purposes.

As it is important to choose a good domain name, it is also equally important to choose a reliable domain registrar. I use to register all my domain names from http://www.thewebpole.com/ at low cost with 24/7 customer support.
The Web Pole's Domain Search Tool can instantly find the Domain Name that you've been looking for. Save big on purchases by registering domains in bulk.

Is it then a bad idea to put your keyword in your domain name?
